Philippi’s fame
I had occasion to visit Philippi, West Virginia late last year. It is the site of the Civil War’s first land battle, sometimes called the Philippi Races because of the speed of the Confederate retreat. It has a mammoth 1905 courthouse, one of the longest covered bridges in the country (over the Tygart River), and a couple of homemade mummies in the museum (converted from its 1911 B&O passenger station).
